After focusing on how the face reflects much of a persons life and character in "A Face In Time," "No Face" is the spin off of that series. I'm always wanting to push myself in different ways of communication. I have become very comfortable with describing a face but seem to neglect everything else. Sense my favoritism for the face is distracting me to articulating everything else, I've decided to remove the temptation. Now the series has become about what our body language says.
In this series I explore a fairly new medium PEN = PERMANENCE. This no erase medium is teaching me a lot about the immediacy of the pen o paper.
"A Face In Time"
Embracing age in a world of botox and tummy tucks. I choose to look at age in terms of wearing a chronicle of a lifetime on the surface of our skin. And challenge fears of aging with the counter allure that true age provides. Also question: when we re-make ourselves with surgery or altering products, are we revealing our true character, or are we stripping away our very identity?
For the past two years I've had the pleasure of working with three strong women all in varying times in their life, 30's. 40's. and 60's. They each seem timeless to me, beautiful in the way they embrace age as growth in wisdom. The excitement they get when learning new and the happiness they get from knowing there is more to gain and share. I adore this perspective. I guess this is where my prompt came for this series. I couldn't understand those who choose to shame themselves for watching there body age, or those who pursue surgery to remove the folds their faces recorded from many years of laughter, concentration, or frustration. A chronicle of our life is formed on our skin, why would you want to erase the memories?
Wood paneling for my base medium was choice for this series. The growth rings of the aged wood mimiced a skin's fleshly surface so faultlessly. It also adds a sweet compliment and contrast to the depth of each graphite and chalk portrait.
While for the past months being intensely focused on this series I've had a rise in curiosity, now every time I pass by someone wonderfully wrinkled I wonder what stories lay between the folds. I have a strong urge to hear the mystery's explained. I want to hear the conversations between those stiff wrinkles.
A series of photo's.
